Seasonal Rhythms and Mental Health

The seasons are changing. Here, in South Florida, we are moving into the fall season. Traditionally, Fall is a time for harvest and for taking stock of the year so far. This is a time to reflect on what has changed since the start of the year, to celebrate accomplishments, and to honor your growth. Fall is also the time to process and prepare – to process lessons learned and to prepare for the end of the year.

After the excitement of the Summer, the shift to Fall and the holiday season can feel significant and can sometimes challenge our mental health. This is especially true if you live in a place where the weather gets colder and the days get shorter.

We want to offer a few simple practices that may support you to align with the seasonal rhythm and help you to center yourself and focus on attunement and reflection.

  • Gratitude List – Make a list all you are grateful for that has come to you this year so far. This can include personal accomplishments, your health, your family, or professional accomplishments. Include big and small things.
  • Intentional Reflection – Spend time in intentional reflection. Make a quiet space for yourself, maybe light a candle or incense, and take a few grounding breaths to begin. Reflect on your year so far – remember where you were at the start of the year and reflect on all your strengths and connections. Allow your mind to wander through your experiences. Return to your breath to keep focused and calm.
  • Clean and Refresh – Not just for Spring time! This is a great time to clean out closets and junk drawers, or emails, or you can unfollow anyone on social media that doesn’t educate or inspire. Many people like to decorate their homes for Fall and for the upcoming holidays; this is refreshing the energy of the home and the lives of its inhabitants.

Fall is also a wonderful time to implement new healthful habits – like trying yoga or starting the day by drinking a large glass of water. How can you refresh your life, your space or your schedule?

Welcome to Fall! We wish you peace and alignment during this seasonal transition.
